His arrest triggered protests in Cross River State, Anambra, Abia State, Imo State, Enugu State, and Delta State.

On the 8th of April 2017, his bail was granted, he was ordered to not grant any interview after his release; this order was disregarded by Nnamdi Kanu after he left prison.

In June 2017, he explained what he meant at the 2015 World Igbo Congress when he talked about guns and bullets to mean the need for US-based Nigerians to have guns to defend themselves against Fulani herdsmen.

He believes in violence as a way to freedom, and he also believes in Judaism. Nnamdi Kanu is married to Uchechi Okwu Kanu. So far, she has been supportive of him.
